5 Small Ways I Stay Close to God During Busy Weeks

There are times in my life when I can feel that I’m not drawing close enough to Jesus.

Everything feels heavier.
I’m more easily overwhelmed at work.
I’m shorter with my family.
Even the normal things in life feel harder than they should.

When I start to feel this way, I’ve learned it’s usually a signal to check my heart and ask myself a simple question:

Am I keeping my eyes on Christ right now?

The truth is that it’s incredibly easy to drift spiritually. The world we live in is busy, loud, and rarely centered on Jesus. Between work, family responsibilities, errands, and everything else on our plates, faith can quietly slip to the side if we aren’t intentional.

If you’re looking for a simple way to reconnect with God, you might also enjoy my 75 Grace Challenge, where I share small daily practices that help bring more grace and intention into everyday life.

I know this because I’ve lived it.

In 2021, I went through a season of extreme burnout. At the time, I was attending a church that didn’t feel like home, and eventually I stopped going altogether. I spent nearly a full year unchurched. During that time, I rarely opened my Bible and hardly listened to worship music. I felt like I couldn’t even bring myself to walk into a church.

Looking back, I can see how far away from Jesus I had drifted.

But over time, I realized something important: staying close to God doesn’t have to mean hours of quiet time or complicated routines. Often it’s the small daily rhythms that keep our hearts connected to Him.

These are five simple ways I stay close to God during busy weeks.

1. I Start Every Morning with Scripture

This is my one non-negotiable.

Every morning after I work out, I make my coffee and settle into a quiet spot before the rest of the house wakes up. Usually, I have one or two cats curled up nearby while everything is still peaceful.

I spend about 30 minutes reading a devotion and a chapter of the Bible.

Right now, I’m working through Portraits of Devotion by Beth Moore, and I’ve been loving it.

Starting the day this way centers my heart before the busyness begins. It reminds me that before I’m anything else…an employee, a mom, or someone with a long to-do list, I’m a daughter of God.

2. I Pray in the Car

One of my favorite ways to pray is while I’m driving.

I literally talk out loud to God in the car. Ever since I became a mom, this has been one of the easiest places to connect with Him. Sometimes it feels like Jesus is sitting right in the passenger seat while I talk through everything on my mind.

I can do this anywhere, driving to work, running errands, or heading to an off-site meeting during the day.

One of the most memorable moments happened when I was unemployed and feeling completely lost about what my next step should be. Even though our family was financially okay, I struggled with the loss of confidence that came with not working.

During one drive, I prayed specifically for a financial opportunity to come my way.

About twenty minutes later, my phone buzzed with a text from a friend asking if I would consider becoming the manager of her store.

I took the job.

Moments like that remind me that God really does hear our prayers, even the ones prayed from a moving car.

3. I Listen to Worship Music While I Work

Some workdays require a lot of focus, and worship music helps me stay grounded while I’m working.

I’ll put on my headphones, open the K-LOVE stream on my computer, and just lock in.

Sometimes I’m doing detailed tasks like cleaning up our donor database, downloading reports, printing acknowledgement letters, or stuffing envelopes. Other times, I’m creating content or working on projects that require more creativity.

Having worship music playing quietly in the background turns ordinary work into something more peaceful.

Lately, the song “Battle Belongs” by Phil Wickham has been on repeat for me.

4. I Attend a Midweek Church Service

Sunday church is important, but I’ve found that midweek services often nourish my faith differently.

Our midweek gathering is smaller and feels more personal, almost like an in-depth Bible study. There’s more conversation, we share prayer requests, and we take time to pray for each other.

It’s also special because my son Cole attends youth group at the same time with his friends. I love knowing he’s learning about the Word and having fun while I’m filling my own cup spiritually.

Midweek church has become one of the anchors in my week.

5. I Take Podcast Walks During My Lunch Break

I only get a 30-minute lunch break at work, but I’ve turned it into something I genuinely look forward to.

I set a timer for 15 minutes and walk around the main street and neighborhood near my office before turning around and heading back.

During that walk, I listen to Christian podcasts that encourage my faith.

Some of my favorites include:

  • Whoa, That’s Good with Sadie Robertson Huff
  • Unashamed with Phil Robertson and family
  • The Max Lucado Encouraging Word Podcast
  • The Ramsey Show

They help me refocus my mind in the middle of a busy workday.

A Final Encouragement

If you’re in a season where you don’t feel as close to God as you’d like, I want you to hear this:

You’re not alone.

Most Christians go through seasons where their faith feels stronger and seasons where they struggle to stay connected.

Instead of feeling ashamed, start by looking for small ways to invite God into the normal rhythms of your day.

You might find that Jesus is waiting for you in places you never expected…your morning coffee, your commute, your lunch break, or even while you’re working through a long to-do list.

Sometimes staying close to God isn’t about doing more.

It’s simply about remembering that He’s already right there with you.
